About the owner

David Wright is a retired (July 2004) lecturer in Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing (University of Sheffield). His interest in disabled peoples' access to the healthcare professions began many years ago when in discussion with Deaf (see footnote) sign language users about the lack of Deaf nurses within the specialist mental health services for Deaf people.

As a lecturer, before the Disability Discrimination Act, David was approached by a student with dyslexia who wanted to know what help was available and how such help can be accessed. This led to work on supporting students with dyslexia.

Much of the work undertaken is now bound within HCP-disability. Other information about David can be found at his home page (Hosted by the University of Sheffield). Please note that as of June 2004 this is not an 'accessible site' (it will be as soon as time allows for editing).

Footnote: 'Deaf' (upper case 'D') is used to signify those individuals who describe themselves as culturally Deaf - in that they use Sign Language and perceive the world in a way in which hearing people do not.
